Aims:

  • To extend current thinking on effective classroom pedagogy, with a focus on the central place of talk in the learning experience
  • To consider what teachers can do to create a classroom talk dynamic that is most beneficial to pupils
  • To look at how teachers can inadvertently close down the learning, or skilfully open up, and maximise, pupils’ learning
  • To introduce the concept of dialogic talk and analyse how it can be used to maximise pupil learning
  • To look at a range of strategies for improving the quality of pupil talk and for developing pupil vocabulary
  • To discuss some practical ideas for assisting pupils to learn about the learning process
